I was going to name this “how to pack a carry on bag” because of my previous post but opted for the less SEO worthy title! So this post revolves around what’s in my carry on & toiletry bag for this upcoming trip!
Any time I travel, I usually bring a backpack of this variety (usually a black JanSport backpack – this is an upgrade) and some sort of makeup bag. For Christmas, I got my boyfriend this Hershel Toiletry Bag and have had my eye on it ever since then. I bet he just checked over on his desk to see if I actually stole it – NOPE got my own bad boy! I really like the size of this bag – it’s not too small and not too big, basically perfect.
Carry On Bag
Just like my suitcase, I tend to overpack my carry on as well but have gotten better with the more I travel. This bag contains…
- Macbook (& charger)
- The Stranger by Albert Camus
- My wallet
- Sheets of coloring pages
- Small size deodorant (just because you’re up in the air doesn’t mean no one can smell you!!)
- Lip balm
- Glasses case that is also holding my headphones
- A headband
- A reusable bottle for water
- Medication (not seen in the picture, I do like to keep some things to myself)
My mom and dad told me while I was growing up that you always need to pack a change of clothes with you in case your luggage gets lost – well, that is really good advice but leaves less room in my bag for (non) essentials! I have been having crippling anxiety lately and hope that while I’m on the plane I can distract myself from my anxiety-ridden thoughts (does anyone else sometimes hate being left alone with their thoughts???) I highly suggest packing lip balm with you, no matter how short the flight is (mine is a little over an hour). The headband is because I really can’t stand my recent quarter life crisis decision to get bangs. OH, there will no doubt be (a lot) of gum in my bag. Also, I suggest bringing an empty bottle through TSA so you can fill it up with water when you’re at the gate because you don’t want to spend $6-10 on a bottle of water. Annnnd, I’m bringing that book with me even though I probably won’t read it.
It is totally a hot mess but I get it and that’s all that matters. Here is the long list of what I bring even though I could live without a majority of this…
- A bar of soap (I don’t like using hotel soap)
- A razor
- Toothbrush & toothpaste
- Shampoo & conditioner
- Out of shower body lotion – I am obsessed with this stuff
- RUSK Hair Shine – for when I straighten my hair
- Oribe Hairspray – traveling is when all the sample size products come in handy
- Box of contacts – I could just take an extra pair with me, but I like to be prepared
- Face Lotion
- Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask
- OleHenriksen Walnut Scrub
- Leave in conditioner – I like soft hair
- Acne medication
- Contact lens cleaner
- Dry shampoo
- Nipple covers because god forbid someone sees your nipples 🙁
I previously traveled with what seemed like my whole makeup collection. I have learned throughout the years that I barely wear any makeup while traveling so there is no sense in bringing 10 pounds worth of makeup products. I will be using these 6 brushes this trip because I find them to be the bare minimum essentials.
- Powder brush
- Blush brush
- Foundation brush
- Flat packing brush for eyeshadow
- Blending brush
- Highlight brush
Something else that I did all of the time when traveling was bring all of my best makeup with me. I was bringing YSL, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, La Mer, Etc. Doing this set me up for disaster because those products are typically bulkier, heavier, and far more expensive – which will suck if they break or get stolen. I also would bring 2 of everything – it was excessive. Now, I pack the bare minimum when it comes to makeup and typically my lower end products. I get peace of mind knowing that I won’t be devastated if these products break or get stolen – also, I cut down the time I spend getting ready when traveling.
I feel like I might be missing something that I need to add to my bag but oh well, I’m sure it will come to me when I’m on the airplane. Honestly, if you’re really tight for space in your suitcase all you truly need is shampoo, conditioner, and soap… unless you’re a daredevil and don’t mind hotel soaps. Oh wait, yeah you also definitely need toothbrush & toothpaste 🙂
